This Kentucky, USA-based rap outfit was formed in 1996 by six students at Western Kentucky University. Skinny DeVille (William Hughes, Louisville, Kentucky, USA), R. Prophet (b. Ryan Anthony, Oakland, California, USA), Big V (b. Vito Tisdale, Bowling Green, Kentucky, USA), Scales (b. Melvin Adams, Milledgeville, Georgia, USA), Ron Clutch (b. Ronald Wilson, Louisville, Kentucky, USA) and B. Stille (b. Brian Scott, Louisville, Kentucky, USA) met up at campus freestyling parties, and before long had built up a strong following on the local circuit. They set up their own record store and started their own line of Nappy Roots clothing, before making their recording debut in 1998 with the independently released Country Fried Cess. The album and the follow-up, 1999’s No Comb, No Brush, No Fade, No Perm …, came to the attention of Atlantic Records who signed the sextet and began touting them as the south’s answer to New York’s Wu-Tang Clan. Nappy Roots made their major label debut in February 2002 with Watermelon, Chicken & Gritz. One of the better records to emerge from the new wave of southern rap, the album’s freewheeling party atmosphere was sampled to best effect on the breakthrough radio hit, ‘Awnaw’.
